I have a Bachelor of Design in constructed textiles with printmaking from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee.
Tapestry is woven on a frame and is one of the oldest forms of woven textile. The frame is prepared by winding cotton warp around it from top to bottom. Coloured strands of weft are then woven in and out of the warp and beaten down so the warp is entirely covered.
I love the quality of the lines, the pixelated and textured effects, and the ability to mix and blend thin strands of colour to achieve different shades. Yarns mix and blend in ways distinct from paint.
My work is highly detailed and fine. I usually weave at a gauge of 8-12 ends per inch, with between 2 and 4 strands of fine cotton yarn as weft. It is a labour-intensive process, taking many hours to complete.
I am inspired by local landscapes in the Blue Mountains and the way light intensifies the colours and shapes. Landscape pieces often begin as small watercolour and collage studies in my sketchbook.
My figure work is inspired by sketches and paintings from life drawing classes at Blue Mountains Creative Arts Centre, Glenbrook.
